New features for grid management — Q2 2026

Each quarter, we update you on new features and useful options in our products. In this quarterly update, we highlight a hidden gem in Gaia LV Network Design. We also take a look at new features in Vision Grid Navigator and Vision Cloud Solution. These improvements are made possible in part by the valuable input from our users.

Gaia LV Network Design

Some existing Gaia features are hardly known among end users, even though they can be very useful. We call these features “hidden gems” and highlight them in our quarterly updates. This time: the bottom-up calculation in Gaia.

Bottom-up calculation

Sometimes it is useful to understand the shape of a stochastic annual active power profile at the MV/LV transformer level. This is relevant, for example, for calculations in medium-voltage grids, such as profile-based and data-driven load flow, where a low-voltage grid is modeled as an aggregated or equivalent load. Bottom-up calculations are also useful for comparing an LV grid model with the available measurement data from an MV/LV transformer. The annual profile also shows how frequently and for how long a transformer is overloaded throughout the year. A standard grid loading calculation, which only calculates peak conditions, would not reveal this.

A full stochastic profile load flow calculation would require too much computing power and take too long for these tasks. The bottom-up calculation ignores grid losses and performs a stochastic summation of all loads and devices in the grid. This provides a quick estimate of the current situation and various future scenarios, including sensitivity analyses. Note: this approach is valid only for radial grids, not meshed grids.

Why this matters

The bottom-up calculation provides a quick estimate of the annual active power profile at the MV/LV transformer level. You can use the calculation for a range of applications and to validate the grid model against measurement data.:

Vision Cloud Solution

In the new Vision CS release, rooms are displayed on the map instead of grid models. This makes all rooms immediately visible in meshed grids, rather than only after opening a grid model. Colors show at a glance which rooms belong together in the model. Results are also color-coded by room.

The recently added grid model quality score is now also shown on the map in Vision CS, in a dedicated view.

Python Library

The PyPtP Python library lets you use the calculation models from Gaia and Vision Network Analysis in your own custom applications. We have received a great deal of positive feedback on PyPtP. We are therefore pleased to announce that we have found a new colleague who will work full time on PyPtP.

Vision Grid Navigator

The completely redesigned Vision Grid Navigator has been very well received by users. The phase-out of the classic Vision Grid Navigator 3.5 is now approaching.

We implemented the following new features in response to feedback and ideas from users. Do you have ideas for further improvements to Grid Navigator? Let us know. We always welcome feedback and suggestions.

Measurement tool

A new tool lets you measure distances.

Highlight

Highlight shows only the selected objects on the map, helping you maintain a clear overview.

Cable joints now visible

Cable joints are now visible on the map.

Supply areas

Supply areas are generated for nodes in Vision and connections in Gaia.

Configurable GDAL folder

Grid Navigator starts faster from a network drive when you copy the GDAL folder to a local drive and configure that location. Set the GDAL folder via Options > File Locations > Specific.

Other improvements

  • Unlocated nodes are easier to find by searching by name, ID, or function.
  • When editing objects, you can copy and paste geographic data.
  • A keyboard shortcut now lets you switch between Grid Navigator and Vision/Gaia.
  • You can choose to display a scale bar.
