Westland Infra uses own meter data in Vision Cloud Solution

With the metering data module in Vision Cloud Solution, distribution system operators can actually perform calculations using their own smart meter data. The use of real-world data enables new applications. For Westland Infra Netbeheer, this way of working is now a reality: this DSO works in Vision CS with its own meter data, made available through Alliander’s P5 portal.

Access via the P5 Portal

Using one’s own meter data offers many advantages, but it is subject to strict rules. Legal restrictions apply in order to protect the privacy of citizens and businesses. Under strict conditions, however, it is possible to use the data. In that case, the data must be anonymised. In addition, the data may only be used for a limited set of purposes (“use cases”).

To categorise, administer, and pass on metering data in a controlled and filtered way, DSO Alliander has developed an application: the P5 portal. After filtering in the P5 portal and verification of whether the applicant is permitted to receive certain data, the smart meter data can, under certain conditions, be used for applications such as grid calculations in Vision CS.

Meter data in Vision Cloud Solution

Westland Infra has connected its head-end system to Alliander’s P5 portal. Phase to Phase has implemented an interface that enables Westland Infra to import the anonymised meter data into Vision CS. This allows Westland Infra to use smart meter data from the Westland region in Vision CS for all permitted use cases, while at the same time complying with all privacy regulations.

New use cases add value

The main advantage of using one’s own meter data is that it enables more use cases. Some use cases can only be carried out using real data. For truly data-driven grid management, the use of one’s own meter data is therefore effectively essential. The use cases below, for example, are highly valuable in identifying and preventing grid congestion and balancing issues — and can only be carried out on the basis of real metering data:

  • Checking the current voltage;
  • Determining the presence of solar panels;
  • Recording voltage interruptions.

Available to any DSO

By making meter data available through the P5 portal, Westland is also prepared to use future use cases immediately (once approved from a privacy perspective). Thanks to the P5 portal and the new Vision CS interface, these benefits are in principle available to any DSO that makes its data available through the P5 portal.
